Old tapes & home movies

Hours of digitised tapes. Finally, someone watches them.

Digitising old VHS, Hi8 or MiniDV tapes is the easy part. Watching ten hours of them to find grandad is not. KinCut does the searching for you.

Start with a video

Before you start

  • Digitise the tape to MP4, MOV or WebM — a local digitising service or a capture device both work
  • One file can be up to 15 GB; longer tapes can be split into several files
  • Older, low-resolution footage works, but faces must still be recognisable

How it works

  • Upload an MP4, MOV or WebM file up to 15 GB, or paste a YouTube link to a video you own or have permission to use.
  • Confirm your email with a one-time code — there’s no password. Your upload keeps going while you do.
  • KinCut scans the video on its own GPU and groups every face it finds. We email you when it’s done.
  • Name the people you recognise and pick who belongs in the reel. KinCut gathers every moment they appear.
  • Watch a free preview of the highlight reel and short clips. Unlock full quality when you’re happy.

A gift that writes itself

A five-minute reel of a grandparent from decades of family tapes is the kind of present people cry over. Make one per person, per family, or per decade from the same video at no extra cost once the video is unlocked.

Questions

Does KinCut digitise tapes?

No. KinCut works with video files. Digitise the tapes first, then upload the files.

Will it recognise someone at different ages?

Sometimes the same person at very different ages is grouped as two people. You can choose both groups for the same reel.
